Why Lucent

Why Lucent

Why Lucent

Precious metals should be easier to understand—and easier to own well.

Lucent was built around a simple idea: people buying physical precious metals deserve to understand what they’re doing. That means understanding what you’re buying, what you’re paying, how your metals will be held, and what happens after the purchase.

We combine experienced consultation with hands-on transaction support and ongoing service to help you navigate physical precious-metals ownership with confidence—from your first questions through purchase, storage, account administration, and eventual liquidation.

The Lucent Philosophy

Your money. Your metals. Your decision.

Buying physical precious metals is a significant financial decision. We believe you deserve clear information, thoughtful guidance, and enough time to understand your options before making it. That philosophy shapes how we do business.

We ask before we recommend.

There is no single product, account structure, or approach that makes sense for everyone. We start by understanding why you’re considering metals, how you intend to own them, your liquidity needs, and what matters to you. Then we present options that reflect those considerations.

We explain the tradeoffs. You make the decision.

Coins or bars. Larger or smaller denominations. Lower-cost bullion or sovereign-mint products. Cash ownership or a self-directed retirement account. We’ll explain the advantages, drawbacks, and costs. You decide what makes sense for you.

You know what you’re paying before you buy.

Before you agree to a transaction, you’ll know the current spot price per ounce, your total purchase price, the percentage you’re paying over spot, and any applicable third-party fees.

The relationship doesn’t end with the sale.

We stay involved after your purchase to help with account administration, valuations, distributions, education, additional purchases, and eventual liquidation. Our goal is to help you understand and manage what you own.

Our Founder

Why I Started Lucent

I didn’t set out to build a precious-metals company.

In my early twenties, I worked for a nonprofit helping people navigate difficult situations. I loved sitting down with someone who felt overwhelmed, understanding what they were facing, and helping them find a way through it.

I was drawn to finance partly because it intimidated me. Money, markets, and investing seemed unnecessarily complicated, and I knew plenty of other people felt the same way. I thought that if I could learn to understand them—and learn to explain them—I could build a career around helping people make difficult financial decisions.

Then 2008 happened.

I worked my way from answering phones to commodities trading and eventually into physical precious metals. When our company began helping clients hold physical gold and silver inside self-directed retirement accounts, I was asked to figure out how to make it work.

I taught myself the process from the ground up: direct transfers and rollovers, self-directed IRAs, custodian requirements, depository procedures, product eligibility, shipping, documentation, and account administration. I developed systems that helped clients move through the process faster and with fewer surprises.

I was in my early twenties, sitting on the phone with people who were watching years of retirement savings disappear. Those conversations stayed with me. They also helped me understand why a tangible asset outside a traditional stock-and-bond portfolio appealed to so many people.

Buying precious metals doesn’t automatically mean you’ve bought them well.

Years later, people were crying on the phone with me again. Only this time, the stock market wasn’t the reason. They had bought precious metals.

As my career progressed into management, compliance, and escalated customer issues, I spoke with people who owned gold and silver but didn’t really understand what they had purchased—or what they had paid for it. Some had bought expensive collectible or “semi-numismatic” products without understanding their pricing or secondary market. Others didn’t understand how far the value of their metals would need to rise before they recovered the cost of the original transaction.

That bothered me deeply. The problem wasn’t necessarily precious metals. The problem was the way precious metals were being sold.

I was told I was giving clients too much information.

I stopped assuming customers wanted a sales pitch and started answering the questions I would want answered if it were my money: How does the IRA work? Where are the metals stored? Who insures them? How do distributions work? What happens when you want to sell? Who do you call after the transaction?

The customers told me the detail mattered. They wrote letters, mentioned me in reviews, and called back with more questions. Again and again, I saw the same thing: when people understood what they were doing, they became more comfortable making their own decisions.

I left the industry. Then I came back.

After building a career in real estate and later consulting for companies entering the precious-metals business, I returned with a fresh perspective. Technology had improved and the industry had grown, but many of the problems that had bothered me were still there.

Customers were still struggling to understand what they were buying. High markups could still be difficult to identify. Promotions promising “free” metals or services often made transactions harder—not easier—to understand. Too much of the industry still seemed designed around getting a customer to make a purchase rather than helping that customer become a knowledgeable owner.

After nearly two decades around this business, I knew too much about how the process worked to believe it had to be this way.

So I decided to build the company I kept wishing someone else would.
